Part 2 - Why Fantasy?
Satisfying the Craving to Escape AND the Deeper Need
Hey Beloved, With the launch of my second book this week - Stardust and following my recent post on Why I Write and Why I share my writing, today I want to dive into the 2nd part: ‘Why Fantasy?’
Having read about the forces of nature that bring me before you in Part 1 on Why I write, Fantasy might seem like a strange choice. But I’ve discovered there is a higher genius behind these transmissions…
We all know those darker moments when emotions feel too heavy, situations or doubts too big, old pain overwhelming… Many of us, myself included, seek an escape in these moments. And some form of a fantasy world is often the escape of choice… Netflix, a good (or trashy) book, a film… anything to distract us from our own life and bring us into a different world.
To some extent I believe this is also healthy. It brings a little bit of padding to allow us to absorb the blows and give ourselves a bit of sweetness/ pleasure.
These pastimes/ habits bring temporary relief, but they rarely shift much of the darkness. And they usually bring us more and more into disconnection, the longer we indulge.
So what if there were a way to ‘escape’ into wisdom and connection?
Now I know that that may sound counter-intuitive, right? You escape to leave the pain or heaviness behind and be in another world that is not your own.
But what if you didn’t need to disconnect? What if, through the light-hearted entertaining fantasy story, you might just find yourself? That inner safety and loving voice that lets you know you’ve “got this” - whatever the “this” may be for you.
Re-minds you of all that you’re capable of. Allows you to FEEL yourself as the warrior, god/goddess, king/queen, adventurer, or whatever archetype might appeal to your own fantasy. Rather than reminding you that other people ARE able to personify that which you would love to feel/ be.
I didn’t set out to find this formula when I started writing my embodied fantasy stories. In fact I didn’t set out to do anything except put pen paper.
Yet I’ve realised this is exactly the experience the stories that have unfolded offer. That rare invitation into fantasy that guides you home, rather than into numbing and disconnection.
A little like plant medicine can, only in a quicker, lighter dose.
That, at least, has been the soul tonic experience I’ve experienced in writing, reading and editing my embodied fantasy stories. They unlock something inside of me and invite me into that wonder-ful, innocent and imaginative world of a child, even as I also confront (and embrace) the darkness. They really do feel like a sacred transmission that I’m privileged to be the conduit for.
Because ultimately, what is the darkness but an invitation inwards to transform, create and reclaim? To grow and experience our heart open in new, expansive and all encompassing ways. So why not have a fantasy torch to help us navigate it?
